Overview

The Personal Support Worker course prepares you to provide safe, person-centred care in homes, long-term care, and community settings. Through hands-on labs, simulations, and a supervised placement, you’ll build the confidence and competencies employers look for—communication, mobility assistance, infection prevention, and professional ethics.

  • Foundations of person-centred and culturally sensitive care
  • Infection prevention & control (IPAC) and safe body mechanics
  • Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Dementia, palliative, and end-of-life support basics
  • Nutrition support, feeding assistance, and documentation
  • Professionalism, teamwork, boundaries, and client confidentiality

Other Certifications (Required for Employment)

The following certifications are commonly required by employers in this field but are not included as part of the program. Students are encouraged to obtain them independently to enhance employability:

  • Standard First Aid & CPR (Level C)
  • Food Safety/WHMIS Orientation
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) or equivalent dementia-care module

Admission Requirements

Domestic Applicants

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • High school completion (or mature student pathway)
  • English proficiency sufficient for study (assessment may apply)

International Applicants

  • Valid passport and study authorization (if required)
  • Translated/assessed academic documents (if not in English)
  • Proof of English proficiency (e.g., IELTS/TOEFL or internal test)
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector)
  • Proof of required immunizations for placement sites
